This is the second year that Rayvin is working in Kansas. He comes from the Philippines with his wife (an elementary school teacher who o is also taking the Foundations Course). Rayvin has two Masters Degrees and one Doctoral Degree. He will finish a third Master’s Degree in November as a Qualified Behavioral Analyst (QBA). He has experience as an associate professor at a university in the Philippines. He has ten years of experience teaching, but this is his first year teaching a reading course at the high school. He worked solely on behavior and social skills in the school least year. He decided to take this course because he needs to learn about literacy instruction.

Problem of Practice and Current Challenges
Currently, along with teaching behavioral intervention classes, he is assigned to teach a reading class for students with special needs. He uses the My Power Up series from myLexia because it was the program used by the previous teacher. Although we discussed the need to match instructional resources and skill development to goals and objectives listed in the IEP, Rayvin has only held this position for two weeks. He is attempting to differentiate the program components as he learns more about the students’ reading levels and skills, but has limited information through documented baseline assessments. He views students’ IEP goals as generic.
A second challenge is his time management and cognitive load as he is teaching a new subject, completing a Master’s Degree by November and fulfilling the Foundations course requirements all at the same time. When asked how I can support him through coaching, he indicated that he would appreciate me “pushing” him to complete assignments in a timely fashion. We reviewed the schedule for the first semester and set deadlines for completion of Module 2.
Current Course Progress
Rayvin has completed the Quadrant assignment, but he has not yet started working through the modules. He used MAP and myLexia data to complete the process. He admits that the course content will be a lot to cover and learn. However, he and his wife will begin the process together. He asked that I reviewed what he submitted for the assessment assignment. He will send it to me through email to discuss during our next meeting.

Rayvin plans to develop a guide that lists key evidence based practices for literacy instruction across strands. He will develop this resource throughout his course participation as he learns and applies application strategies within each course module. We will use this plan to address a professional goal later in the semester.
Current Draft Goal Expectations
Rayvin will develop a draft student learning goal to finalize during our next coaching session with consideration of the following:
- Based on student need.
- Identify specific students to include in the goal based on skill goals on their IEPS.
- Decide what instruments to use to measure growth.
- Identify instructional strategies you plan to use.
- Formulate a draft goal for our next meeting and determine how to measure baseline (use IEP PLOP data?) and final goal attainment level.
