Notes

Coachee Note 1:

Anson and I started with talking about the cruise he just returned from with his family.

We discussed the Edutopia article I sent about retrieval activities and the “overlearning” that some students who struggle may need. We also discussed more tactile activities may help his targeted student that struggles with paying attention and could be missing whole group instruction. We also discussed having the student track her progress.

Next we discussed a goal. He would like to see his targeted student be able to identify and form all 26 letters.

He emailed the breakdown of this DREAM goal:

D – Data-responsive
Based on assessment data, the student can produce all 26 letter sounds but can only identify and correctly form 5 out of 26 letters when shown a letter or asked to name it.
R – Relevant
This goal is relevant because accurate letter identification and formation are essential for sound–symbol mapping. This supports decoding, encoding, and fluent reading development in kindergarten.
E – Environment / Context-Specific
This goal will be addressed through targeted intervention in letter identification and formation. Also as daily phonics warm-ups where the student practices naming the letter, keyword, and sound for all 26 letters with the class. This will be supported by small-group and individual interventions such as multisensory letter tracing, letter–sound matching activities, and repeated exposure using visual and tactile supports.
A – Attainable
With consistent, explicit instruction and repeated, supported practice, it is attainable for the student to significantly improve letter identification and formation skills within a focused instructional cycle.
M – Measurable
Within 3 weeks, the student will correctly identify and form at least 20 out of 26 letters when shown a letter or asked to name it, as measured by weekly letter identification and formation checks. Progress will be tracked using a sound–spelling chart where the student earns a sticker for each letter she has mastered.
Anson will send a 3-5 minute video for us to discuss next time. Our next meeting is scheduled for 2:00 on 3/16.
