Notes

Coach Log Note 1:

V Step –

Lisa shared that she is familiar with the course content; she took LETRS training and applied it in grades 1 and 2.  She looks forward to reviewing the material and indicates her value of structured literacy components to enhance teaching and learning. This course will meet one of her requirements to maintain certification as she does not have a master degree. Her first career was in the field of business.

This is her second year teaching grade 5 social studies.  No other peers are taking to the course; there is  no co-teaching nor paraprofessional support. Lisa uses Kids Discover as the basis of her curriculum.  She supplements the program by having students do lots of reading and writing (quick writes, longer, text essays).

E Step –

We discussed her problem of practice.  Reading comprehension skills are hindering students – many can decode, but can’t answer content comprehension.  We discussed the Four Quadrant Model to determine where student strengths and needs exist.  After much discussion, she decided to focus her student goal on reading comprehension.   She shared that Kids Discover comes with little literacy support and no assessments.

Next Steps

To Do: To prepare for our student learning goal with a focus on comprehension, Lisa will: Create comprehension questions on a grade level reading passage from an upcoming unit of study in Kids Discover. Students in one class will take the assessment We will finalize a DREAM goal at our next meeting and identify instructional strategies to support goal attainment. At that meeting we will quantify percentage of growth……
