Notes
Mona explained that she was a resource teacher for grades 2,3,5. She uses the Sonday curriculum and says it is really boring. The children don’t like to come to resource. She wants to make it fun. She supplements with UFLI. She uses Quick Phonics Screener (QPA) as her Core Phonics Assessment. She has seven 2nd graders and 2 are decoding; five 3rd graders – some can decode CVC words.; three 5th graders – one can read but has trouble with comprehension, the other 2 are working on digraphs.
Her goal for her students is for them to move from the 1st percentile to the 30th percentile by the end of the school year. She says they do MAPS testing in December.
When I asked her what she wanted to know more about from the Foundations course, Mona said that Scarborough’s Rope is new. She wants to learn more, place students in the correct quadrant, and design learning.
Her most pressing concern was a 3rd grader who was refusing to come to resource because she did not want to work on silent e. We talked about motivation and self-monitoring. We brainstormed how it might work for her with this child.
