Galenna Nelson

This session was a great session getting to know Galeena as a teacher. We discussed a bit about her and her teaching environment. She talked with me about her students as readers and writers. While they are just getting started she is seeing that their writing is better than she typically sees this time of year – complete sentences and good punctuation. All of this said, Galeena teaches mainly math as their school departmentalizes. She teaches math to all three classes of 5th grade.

She is working with two literacy groups for WIN time and hopes to combine the two. One is an on-level group and the other is a fluency group. She is going to be using the book Walk Two Moons with the groups. She will work with them 30 minutes a day. There are 14 students and she will use Fast Bridge to progress monitor her fluency kids.

I want to dig deeper next time into how she is planning this unit and how she determines the objectives and standards. I have asked that she bring a lesson that she will be teaching in the near future to our next session.
