Notes
Sheri has only been teaching for 4 years. She is a 6th grade SPED teacher and this is her first year teaching literacy and math in a resource and push in situation in her school. Previously, she was in charge of the behavior room. She has 2 classes a day where she is to help students with their literacy skills and also teach the current ELA curriculum. She has not been give a program to use for the intervention part of her literacy classes and is at a loss as to how to approach literacy instruction for students who are reading significantly below grade level. Her biggest roadblock is having no program to follow in order to consistently provide systematic, explicit, direct instruction that builds up the reading and spelling skills in her students. She is leaning toward having a goal with one of her small literacy classes that includes reading one syllable nonsense words with 2 and 3 consonant blends. That seems to be their biggest difficulty in decoding at the moment. We talked about what instructional strategy she could use to accomplish a goal like this and she had none. I will send her some resources for some instructional strategies that she could use. At our next meeting she will have finalized a goal and instructional strategies on how to accomplish that goal.
