Laurie has a wide variety of experience in education teaching at many different grade levels. She currently teaches 8th grade ELA regular ed classes but has one smaller group a day and does after school tutoring. She has a lot of family responsibilities with an elderly parent that limit her and not much support at school for her interest in increasing literacy instruction. Laurie identified a need in her smaller group for fluency instruction. Their reading rates all tended to be below 100 wpm as identified by FastBridge testing. We talked about some strategies she could use in addition to modeling and choral reading to help these students increase their reading rates. She thought that their accuracy rates were acceptable. She will collect some data and have a firm grasp on what goal she would like to accomplish at our next meeting.
