Coach Log Note 1:

V  Step –

Erin teaches grade 5 math and we spent much time talking about the role of literacy development to enhance math concept, vocabulary, and core knowledge.  She uses Core Knowledge (reading curriculum for her grade level, but doesn’t actually teach this – she supports this ELA curriculum in study hall.  .  in her content course and Read Live for the intervention block. We discussed the match between these two programs with science of reading; she might use that information to compliment her course work

She is concerned that the application assignments might be difficult, but we addressed how she would be able to adapt them as needed to fit her content area (by speaking with Dr. C0.

Erin has a background in literacy; she has taught all grade levels at the elementary level and has 20 years of experience.

E Step –

We discussed Erin’s problem of practice as students’ grasp of math vocabulary.  She would like to focus on this area for her student goal. Students are starting their fraction unit and still don’t understand terms such as numerator and denominator.

Next Steps

To Do: Determine the core vocabulary concepts and terms that will help with cumulative learning over time.( preferably on an upcoming unit). Use this list to develop a pretest to establish a baseline of student performance. Determine the group of students who will be addressed in the goal. Determine the percentage of students who should reach the goal by the end of the semester. We will set a DREAM goal at our next meeting and identify key strategies to integrate math and literacy instruction.
