Coach Log Note 1:

In the first coaching conversation with Katie, we spend some time getting to know each other and talking about what our time together would look like.

Teaching experience: Katie has taught 3rd grade for 22 years.

Class: 21 students, 1 in behavior room full time, 1 in IIC with severe autism but in her classroom most of the day, 1 hearing impaired with full-time interpreter, 1 gifted student, 3 in EL with one of them being a new comer. Overall a very well behaved class.

Assessments: MAP testing – 1/2 of kids in red and 1/2 in green, Benchmark, QPA. Just out of curiosity, she did the spelling assessment in QPA.

Focus: Tends to focus more on the fires and worries she sometimes puts off the kids on grade level. The area that she really sees herself focusing on moving forward in this class is decoding.

I visited with Katie about what she has been doing in regard to her concerns with kids and decoding issues and her initial response was, “too much.” I think that this is so common when teachers don’t have the information that they need. SHe immediately followed up with “it’s getting better this year with the class.”
