Notes
I enjoyed getting to know Jovelyn who is a special education teacher for grades 2-3. Jovelyn is from the Phillipines and has been here just 2 years but has prior teaching experience. She supports her students in the areas of reading and math.
Resources : Sonday (has not been trained in how to use this)
Familiarity: Has not been trained in Sonday but follows her colleague and is picking it up. Also has not had dyslexia training and has numerous students with Dyslexia diagnosis.
Local Support: There is an instructional coach but she does not get one on one time with her. Classroom teachers do PLC regularly with the IC and Jovelyn can attend but is often pulled away to deal with other things such as behavior.
Challenges: Phonemic awareness, Fluency and Comprehension, only 30 minutes with the students each day and groups have varying needs.
Classes: 8-9 3rd graders – higher skills and less shut down, worries about retention of skills, 5 2nd graders – working on letter sounds and names. She does worry about attending to the kids other needs as well as neeting their reading needs in such a short amount of time (we did discuss other ways to check in).
Progress monitoring- FastBridge and MAP
We did get into a surface level discussion of what a typcial Sonday lesson looked like and how she decides when to move forward or when to reteach.
