Met with Becca for our initial coaching session to build rapport and learn more about her role as a K–5 special education teacher. Becca shared that she values the flexibility and small-group nature of her position, particularly the opportunity to build strong relationships with students and better understand how to help each student be successful. She currently serves approximately 14–15 students and is completing screeners and getting to know their individual literacy needs. Becca recently began using UFLI and feels positive about the structure and support it provides. She identified differentiating instruction within small groups as an area for growth, particularly when students are working on similar skills but progress at different rates. We discussed using our coaching time to strengthen her confidence and expertise with literacy instruction, student grouping, and responding to individual needs within groups.
