Recap: Allison is a K teacher at Christ Preparatory Academy. Her students are only in class on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
During a personal check-in, Allison shared that the holidays were busy. They took her father-in-law (82 years old) to Atlanta for a long weekend. She said the aquarium there is “world class!” She said she successfully completed the first course.
I shared that our purposes today were:Â to “catch up” and to explore what our coaching work could look like in this second course.
When considering the content of the modules, she said that she was most familiar with/confident in teaching vocabulary and comparing/contrasting. She is least confident in the area of morphology. She stated that students do a writing journal at home and they are attending to capitalization and punctuation (even quotation marks!).
She thinks she is interested in exploring and supporting vocabulary (such as choosing tiered words for instruction). She shared some work they had done with Happy Birthday, Dr. King by Kadir Nelson – two meanings of “dream.”
She shared that they do Acadiance testing and that all of her students had improved, but some still had challenges (academic and behavioral). Even though their skills had increased, so had the expected cut point. It measures phonemic segmentation, first sound, letter names (“so much better!), and nonsense words).
When asked to share recent successes, she shared about her map unit – concepts and vocabulary. Students were very interested.
We will meet again on 2/17/26 at 3?45.
