Coaching Session #1 – Verifying Perspectives

  1. This or That

Movie first or book first?

Fiction or non-fiction?

Handwritten notes or emails to a close friend?

  1. Learning about your background

Who or what influenced you to become a teacher? Bekah was influenced by many of her teachers and talked specifically about her 3rd grade teacher, who helped her through a personally tough time, and her choir teacher.

What experiences have you had as a teacher including districts, schools, grade levels? Bekah received her AA degree and then was a paraprofessional before becoming a teacher. She taught in the Spring Hill School District as a social studies and science teacher before earning her SPED Master’s degree. She has been a special education teacher in Olathe for the past 10 years.

  1. Examining your professional beliefs

What is something you strongly believe in when it comes to educating children? Bekah believes that you have to make connections with students, especially struggling students to earn their trust and to help them academically.

What do you consider to be the single most important literacy strategy you use in your classroom? This is an area where Bekah feels she needs support. She did take some LETRS training, but it was not official training.

What do you want to gain from coaching related to literacy practices? Bekah feels she needs support for developing strategies that will work for her students and suggestions about what might work when the strategies and interventions are not working.

How are the district’s curriculum materials helping or challenging for your students? Bekah believes the current curriculums are helping a bit. She noted that UFLI seems to be working better than the Sonday materials for her students. The UFLI materials are helping more than Wit and Wisdom. An area that she noted is difficult is when the students are receiving interventions in the classroom that may not match what is being completed in the SPED classroom.

What are you leaning toward as far as an academic goal for your students during the coaching process? Bekah is likely to focus on decoding skills for her 2nd and 3rd grade students. This would be 3-4 students. She would like to focus on teaching decoding skills. We will work on formalizing this goal at our next coaching session.
