Notes
Our conversation started with getting to know her questions. She shared her path to teaching. She started out as a pre-med major and two years in, she decided to switch to education. A fun fact is that she attended, student taught and is teaching now all at the same school – Indian Hills Elementary in the Auburn-Washburn District.
She shared that her literacy block is 90 minutes every day with 30 minutes being intervention time. The intervention groups are based on student performance of CFAs based on the 10 mastery standards required by the district.
Her district has used Benchmark Advance the last two years. There are 3 lessons per day to cover – It takes 3 days to cover a concept. She doesn’t feel like the materials are explicit enough in their teaching.
We talked about small group time. She said that she hasn’t been able to get that off the ground yet due to behaviors in the classroom of the students working independently. She said she often has them work on weekly morphology assignments or IXL (web-based lessons and quizes.
She shared that she hadn’t completed any modules, but has looked at it. In class, they had discussed the assessment module and she felt a little overwhelmed.
