Shahlo Mamedova and I met for her 3rd coaching meeting on Wednesday, March 3. Shahlo is in the Take Action portion of the Vector phaes. Shahlo does not have her own classroom, so her goal has centered around resources that school districts are using to teach the five components of reading. At our last meeting we discusssed that she would visit with the schools attended by her children to peruse the curriculums being used. Unfortunately, the schools were not able to provide her with teachers manuals or resources to be able to analyze strategies and trajectories being used. She visited with her professor for this course and was provided online resources that clearly showed the trajectory of teaching reading that Shahlo wanted to see. She was particularly impressed with the Reading Universe website and learned much about strategies for teaching reading as well as learning goal projections. She indicated that she wished she had had this resource as she was trying to teach reading in an ESOL program.
To deepen her knowledge and allow the opportunity to operationalize the strategies she has identified, Shahlo now has a goal of preparing a presentation that will illustrate her knowledge of the science of reading and strategies being used by schools to meet the needs of students as they proceed on the trajectory of becoming fluent readers. Shahlo has prepared a goal and timeline for her work.
