Notes

Coach Log Note 1:

REFLECT AND RECOMMIT

  • Check-in

Leslea reported that she is good.  It’s hectic at school today!  During the summer, they plan to work on their fence.  She said so casually, “We did the bathroom last weekend.”  She completed all of her progress monitoring!

  • Course

All done two calls ago!

  • Goal(s) Met?  YES

All three of her students got 14/16 on the vocabulary words from The Phantom Tollbooth.

She successfully completed her work with Word Sorts and the Word Matrix Mat.

  • To what do you attribute your success?

(see previous log)

  • Is there anything you would have done differently?

No

  • What new learning was significant?

syntax and morphology – deeper understanding of how and when to incorporate this work into her instruction

She told me about the opportunity she had to mentor a colleague who is a behavior teacher and doesn’t have much (if any) opportunity to teach reading.  He came to observe her, and then used her word cards to teach a student, himself!

  • What is something you learned about yourself? Your students?

“I feel like I already knew my own strengths and needs.”

Her students responded well to new strategies.  🙂

  • What does taking this course mean for your work next year?

more syntax work, emphasis on suffixes and prefixes

“I want to hit these harder next year to see the effects it has on fluency and comprehension the following year!”

  • When you consider our coaching times together, what things were helpful? Not helpful?

materials and ideas were helpful (she took paper materials and added to them to make them kinesthetic and hands-on), sharing of the story maps I created for the Olathe School District ESL Department for each of the novels from Wit and Wisdom for fourth and fifth grade students.  She said, “I liked them!  I shared them with the classroom teacher and we used them to support initial understanding and then to review.  I have them all printed out in my notebook for use next year.”  She showed me proof.  🙂

  • Final Word from Coachee:

“I feel confident with it (what she learned and how she used it).  Helping my colleague proved to myself that I knew the material.”
