Notes
 REFLECT AND RECOMMIT
- Check-in
Allison said she was doing well and that it was a busy time of year. They have a wedding coming up! Her son will be flying home this week, be home a week, and then they are all flying to Yosemite for the wedding.
- Course
She finished the course on Monday, completing her last assignment and test. She said, “I’ve learned a lot!”
- Goal(s) met?  YES
The goal was for 95% of her students to score 12 out of 15 on the rubric. Only one student scored lower than 12 (10), the average was 13 and the median was 14. She commented that they had improved so much in their sentence-writing, adding details, with many of them able to write more than one sentence.
- To what do you attribute your success?
We worked together to build this list:Â consistent, explicit instruction, adding in more oral opportunities before they wrote, building on and stretching them, greater awareness on the teacher’s part of the importance of this, the teacher’s enthusiasm, the rubric she developed, and progress monitoring.
- Is there anything you would have done differently?
She hopes next year to start sooner – to be teaching “Who” and “Do” by November and utilizing it 2x/week in their journals.
- What is something you learned about yourself? Your students?
She described learning the value of the work and her hopes for her students.
- What does taking this course mean for your work next year?
She wants to implement oral syntax work sooner at the start of the year. She plans to instruct 2-3 letters a week at the start, all the while building phonological and phonemic awareness in her students. She plans to asses and diagnose and share info with parents (reminder: she only has then a couple of days a week for instruction, so parent involvement is crucial!). Her resource is Acadiance, and she sees what it has to offer and what she needs to supplement.
- When you consider our coaching times together, what things were helpful? Not helpful?
She named good resources from me (e.g. fcrr.org), knowledge I shared from my experience, and the importance of looking for “hidden” minutes to maximize instruction.
- Final Word from Coachee:
“You were supportive.” 🙂
