Michelle finished the APESI test with her students. In the literacy category, 90% of her students scored a 3 or 4. Her goal was to have 70% score a 3 or 4. The students also showed improvement in social-emotional skills and overall performance compared to previous tests. Michelle noted that the second administration went more smoothly and that students could communicate their summer drawings when prompted with questions.
Michelle has completed the course and was glad that it was completed in 1 semester. She wished the course could be broken down by grade levels to provide more collaboration with colleagues; for example, EC-1, 2-5, Middle & High School. We also discussed a new legislative requirement for schools to have literacy specialists. Michelle expressed concern about the limited number of certified specialists available to meet this requirement across Kansas schools.
