Notes
During a personal check-in, Brianna said she had been working in her classroom this week. The teachers’ first day is August 4th and the kids’ first day is August 12th. She looked tired and said that the AC in her room was, “iffy.”
I asked about how the Praxis had gone, and she said that she had passed with a 184 (well above the 145 she needed!). For her ELL course she has one more meeting next Monday when she will give her final presentation.
She took the final for this course last week.
I congratulated her on BOTH efforts and asked if this would mean more money for her and she said it would, “move her over,” on the salary scale.
I said that we had two purposes today:Â to talk about her learning about Syntax and Writing and to reflect and celebrate.
She said that she had made writing her, “Problem of Practice,” because even though she “knew” the basics of teaching writing, she struggled with student purpose and motivation. She said that she got a lot of good ideas which would help her in, “getting them to want to write.” She said that the module had clarified for her what syntax is all about and she was “enthralled” when watching the video about 6+1 Traits! We talked about how conventions are important, but possibly not that exciting for second graders, and so she plans to also focus on IDEAS and WORD CHOICE. I affirmed her choices. We talked about how valuing and validating students’ ideas would build confidence in them and the belief that, “Everybody is a writer.” She also knows that, “Handwriting is an important step!”
When asked what, out of all of her new learning, “bubbled up to the top, ” she said COMPREHENSION – “I will use the ideas in the module a lot!” She especially wants to teach them how to infer and will be using graphic organizers from the module and from me.
I stated how I had seen her toolbox expand and her confidence grow. I said I had confidence that, as she encounters challenges in reading instruction, she will be able to ask herself, “What have I learned that will address this challenge?”
I gave her the final word, and she said “I have appreciated doing it (the course and coaching) this way. Thank you.”
