Goals

By the end of the course, I will design an implementation plan for a 6th grade ELA unit or units that targets a 6th grade priority standard for SMSD: RI.6.2 (Determine a central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments.). This plan will include identified curriculum units and a minimum of three evidence-based comprehension strategies from this course.

Notes

Coach Log Note 1:

Kim Stark and I met on Tuesday, July 14 to review the work that has been accomplished toward meeting the goal of revising literacy units to include comprehension strategies found in the course.

Kim has now completed the revision of two units of study using the comprehension instructional framework found in this course.  For unit 6, the final unit, Kim incorporated the gist template, the shrinking paragraph strategy and the objective summary.  She is excited to use all of this in the upcoming year.

One of the suggestions I discussed with her was the idea o utilizing these strategies not only in the reading class, but also integrating them into other content areas.  She teaches social studies as well as language arts and could see real advantages to integrating these strategies in that content.

Kim is now finished with her problem of practice and only has to present it to her class in the upcoming weeks.  She feels as though the class and the whole experience has been valuable to her. I think her students are very fortunate to have her for their teacher!
