Notes
Holly and Kristin discussed setting developmentally appropriate goals for 3-year-olds. Several options were discussed: focusing on identifying student names, oral language skills, phonological awareness, and listening comprehension. Holly decided to focus on listening comprehension. Several instructional strategies were discussed. Holly will included a “we do, you do” structured she observed in another preschool. She will also do modeling, repeated readings, retelling stories, use pictures to help students retell, and have students act out stories. We will both search for rubrics to help quantify students progress to include with Holly’s goal.
We communicated through email several times and were unable to find a comprehension assessment for 3-year-olds, so we created one using the Kansas Early Childhood state standards, choosing ones aligned with literacy. We used this information to have ChatGPT help create a rubric using a play-based method to assess comprehension. Holly will work on getting baseline data from her students.
