Glenda was happy with the progress that her student made throughout this goal. She realized that the student had some phonemic issues and she targeted working on the alphabetic principle with this student. She also worked with the student on recognizing a vowel team within a word. She felt like the one-on-one instruction and consistent routines helped the student to begin matching the letters to a sound and recognizing the vowel team when in a word. She thinks that concentrating on a few vowel teams at a time helped her student not become overwhelmed by trying to learn multiple vowel teams at once. Since the student had no strategy for matching letters to sounds and some phonemic issues as well, teaching a few vowel teams at a time was effective. She has shared the student’s progress with the student’s mother and her PLC and both were pleased with the progress the student has made. Glenda noted that the student has applied the strategies she has taught with these four vowel teams to new vowel teams and is more easily mastering those.
