Notes
During a personal check-in, Emily shared that Spring Break was good (but not long enough!). Theo enjoyed his “Yes Day” 6th birthday and had his parents all to himself for the activities he chose. 🙂 Emily said that it helped in coming back that she has a good class.
She told me that she wrapped up the first course before Break.
When asked what specific actions she has taken to meet the goal, she told me about meeting with her group three times last week. She utilized El Konin boxes with lots of modeling and focused on short a for the nonsense words. Kam, who had previously kept wanting to turn the nonsense words into real words, was now understanding that when you push up the three sounds for the letters, those are the only sounds you have to work with – you can’t switch them out for something else to make a real word! 🙂 Students could successfully decode the short a words, so we marked the goal progress at 25%. She will be teaching short o this week. Her plan is to start with El Konin boxes so that they understand that the PROCESS is the same – only the vowel has changed – and then may also utilize magnetic letters to maintain novelty/interest.
We then began to explore what her second goal in the semester might be. I named over the topics included and asked her to identify the ones she was most and least comfortable with/confident in teaching. She is thinking she might want to explore new strategies and set a goal for her instruction in either comprehension or writing. We will discuss further at our next meeting after class has begun again. We will next meet on 4/6/26 at 1:50 pm.
