Goals

Between April 16 and May 7 each student in my focus group will grow from near mastery (3 or 4 out of 5) on a vocabulary in context pretest to mastery (5 out of 5) on a vocabulary test. To achieve this goal, I will meet with this small group at least twice a week and we will focus on identifying context clues which will enhance comprehension of the reading passage.
Stage: Midpoint

Goal Information

Date: May 3, 2026

Attainment Scale:
Starting Point:

Currently, only 3 of the focus students grew on the comprehension test after trying strategies to identify background knowledge. The instructional focus will change and students will be asked to write questions like the ones found in Wit and Wisdom to enhance their ability to identify context clues. Beth will model writing the goals on April 9 and administer a pretest.

Midpoint:

By April 23, students will have written two questions to show knowledge of context clues to aid in comprehension.

Target Goal:

A post test will be administered by May 7, with the goal of all 3 children growing in their ability to comprehend by correctly answering questions that require use of context clues.

RESULTS: When administered the post test, the focus students improved. All sccored a 4 or a 5. No student scored as 3.

On the FAST BRIDGE assessment that was administered, 2 of her 3 focus student scores grew more than they had grown on past FAST BRIDGE assessments. One student grew from a score of 513 to 524, another student grew from 513 to 540. Although not a significant growth, the final focus student grew from 513-516. Beth attributes this to the time she took in working with the students in small groups. Growing on the Fast Bridge Assessment was not part of the original goal, but worth mentioning.

Notes

Coach Log Note 1:

Beth Pope and I met on April 27, 2026 to discuss her work with her 3 focus students who are working on increasing comprehension through the use of context clues.  Beth is trying a new strategy in which the children will write questions that require the use of context clues, modeled after the questions in Wit and Wisdom.

On Tuesday, April 21, Beth was able to meet with her small group and modeled writing questions that require the use of context clues to aid in comprehension.  On Tuesday, April 28, the children will bring one question that they have written which requires the use of context clues.  Beth had not asked the children to write multiple choice questions, but I encouraged her to do so, so that they would reflect the type of questions that will be found on the Wit and Wisdom assessment which will be used as the post assessment.

Beth continues to struggle with student absentees and school activities which infringe upon the time in which the students can meet in the small group.

Our next meeting will be held on May 7.  At this time, Beth will have worked more with the students on the questioning strategy and will have student work for me to view.

Next Steps

To Do: Continue to work with students in writing questions to aid in using context clues for comprehension.
