Notes

Coach Log Note 1:

During a personal check-in, Ann shared that her daughter, Elie, will be dancing in shows at both ST and ON.  Sylas is taking a cooking class at the Culinary Institute.  Julia got a Superior rating at the piano competition festival and scored extremely well on a theory test.  Ann is going with Eddie on a first grade field trip to Deanna Rose.  She showed me her desk and said it was an indication of her brain right now (cluttered!).

She said that the course was good.  She had felt a little behind so she spent time on the weekend and finished Modules 7/8, and then taught a comprehension lesson on retelling.

I stated that we had two purposes today:  to discuss her student goal and her teacher goal.

Her students mastered 4/10 (of the CVC words), which is the midpoint, on official measures.  After focusing on o, they got all five of the words on what she called, “a little check-in.”  She has started instruction on e, and is finding that they are confusing it with i, which I said also matched my experience.  She is doing a new activity with them – a word ladder (she made one for e), and tries to meet with them every day.  In fact, on a day that she missed, Tripp said at the end of the day, “We didn’t come back with you today,” and was regretful.  She said that the boys are “in a groove” and making gains and, “I feel good about it.”

For her teacher goal, she chose the content area of Comprehension.  She described for me what she had done with teaching them to use a Retelling wheel (who, where, when, problem, resolution, how story ended).  She has also utilized picture cards to sequence the story events as she reads.  She modeled retelling and had also utilized opportunities for partners to “talk it through.”  She said the students were successful and did, “a great job!”  She reflected that the more they talk, the better they comprehend.  She also reflected on adding a picture (not included in her set) that illustrated a key point in the retelling.  She is making connections that she needs/wants to add more opportunities for students to talk about their learning across the content areas.  She is planning some instruction for comparing and contrasting next.

We will meet again on 5/5/26 at 1:50 pm.
