Notes

Coach Log Note 1:

Today we met to revisit and refine Courtney’s goal. She has continued implementing cooperative learning structures with her students. This past week, she tried a “Give One, Get One” activity, but it was not as successful as she had hoped. She observed that many students are still heavily dependent on her, rather than taking risks and generating their own ideas. As a result, when it came time to share, some students had little to contribute. She also noted that higher-performing students were becoming frustrated, prompting her to rethink the structure.

We discussed ways to better scaffold the activity to increase both engagement and accountability. One idea was to use a group poster where each student writes in a different colored marker. This would make individual contributions visible, allowing more confident students to demonstrate their thinking while also holding less active students accountable.

We also explored strategies to involve students who struggle with generating ideas. One approach is to assign them the role of gathering ideas from other groups, using the “One Stray” structure. This allows them to participate meaningfully without the initial pressure of independent idea generation.

Courtney plans to try a combination of these two strategies in the coming week to see if they improve student engagement and participation.

Next Steps

To Do: Courtney is going to work on scaffolding the independent writing piece by combining two structures that increase the accountability and give the ones struggling to write a lot an extra job and being the one who goes and gets another idea from a group. She will also have her end of year data to be able to talk about together to see how students ended up with comprehension.
