Notes

Coach Log Note 1:

During a personal check-in, Allison shared that her Easter was good.  Like a regular Sunday, they went to church with her parent and then had dinner with them.  She told me about also going to church with them on Wednesdays and making a meal for them beforehand and leaving the leftovers for them.

She said that the course is going really well!  She has enjoyed and appreciated the speakers, the most recent of which was Coach Carla on Syntax.  She is working on that module currently.

I shared that our main purpose today was to talk about progress toward her goal.  She had sent me some information about how she was assessing the students on their use of Syntax, and during the call I asked some clarifying questions about the “levels” in the rubric.  They are currently working on expanding their sentences from “Who” and “Do” to adding “Where” and “When.”  Today she did a lesson on, “Where do you put your period?” sharing orally two thoughts/sentences that needed to be divided.  She said they got it right away.  She laughingly told me that one student solved the problem by putting the word “and” between the two.  🙂

She said that over the summer she want to look at where she’s “hitting” everything.  She wishes she had begun this work orally at the beginning of the year.  We talked about students being able to do it orally before they could be expected to write sentences.  She said she is seeing what a difference this work is making.  I shared with her something that I learned from Dr. Jeff Howard of the Efficacy Institute – You’re only responsible for what you do AFTER you know.  She smiled.  We talked about the progression from making a picture and writing random letters to labeling a picture with familiar words to attempting phonetic spelling to say what they want to say to being more accurate with their spelling as they write.  She said that she did start journals that students write in at home, making a picture and attempting first one, then two, sentences about the picture.  She is very excited about using the Syntax Project slides shown to them in class.  I shared my screen and we looked at and talked about some.

She thinks students can reach their goal and she can have final data for them on 5/5/26 at 3:45 pm (schedule adjusted to give her more time and to account for special events for me and for her precluding a meeting on 4/28/25, 5/12/26, and 5/19/26).
