Notes

Coach Log Note 1:

Courtney is excited to review the next set of student paragraphs. Her students performed extremely well on the previous set she collected, and she is taking time to reflect on both the process and the progress they have made. She is considering possible reasons for this growth: it may be that she is more invested in this particular unit, and her students are responding to that energy, or it could be the increased use of cooperative learning structures, with students spending more time out of their seats, engaging in discussion. This shift may be contributing to their greater willingness to participate and volunteer.

Regardless of the cause, Courtney is noticing a new level of depth in her students’ thinking and work. We discussed the importance of facilitation, particularly giving students space to debrief their learning process and remain open to inquiry. This approach can lead to deeper understanding and stronger transfer of skills. Providing students with opportunities to share what has been effective for them can also increase their sense of agency.

Courtney was especially interested in this idea and plans to implement a gallery walk prior to our next meeting to gather student feedback and insights.

We also discussed her instructional practice moving forward. Engaging in this reflective process is helping her build confidence in her ability to support high levels of student engagement and growth. Looking ahead, we considered how she might approach units that feel less engaging by identifying the core goal of the unit and intentionally infusing strategies that promote interest and participation.

We plan to meet again in two weeks. Courtney will bring additional student paragraphs, and we will continue reflecting on her students’ progress toward their goals.
