Notes
During a personal check-in, Allison said that Spring Break was good, but busy. They made a trip to College
Station, Texas, for a shower for her y0unger son, who is getting married May 19th at Yosemite.
She said coursework was going well, but she was glad for the break to catch up. She has finished Module 10 (text structure) and is ready for Module 11 (syntax).
I shared that our main purpose today was to talk about the work she has been doing toward her goal. She has continued showing pictures and asking them, “What do you see?” She is also doing dictation sentences every time. Today’s explicit instruction was about needing an upper case letter to start the sentence and a period at the end. They have worked on, “What does a sentence need?” and they know that it has to make sense, it has to have two parts and they have learned the terms nouns and verbs. In addition to instruction in her goal area (syntax), she is supporting comprehenion with short listening activities. We talked about the role that visualizing could play in helping her students to “see” and “remember” what they are hearing/reading.
We also looked at the instructional strategies in Module 11 and she is planning to watch the video there on sentence elaboration and possibly utilize strategies for sentence expansion and elaborating on the subject/noun and the verb. We agreed that students could benefit from orally doing this work even before they have the skills to write down their expanded sentences.
She will send me the rubric she is using so that I can see all aspects of what is being measured.
We will meet again on 4/14 and 4/28/26.
