Notes

Coach Log Note 1:

During a personal check-in, Leslea shared that she and her husband (with some help from her kids) completed the kitchen remodel from start to finish over Spring Break!  I got to see pictures.  :-).

She had completed the first course well before Spring Break.

I shared that our main purpose today was to talk about her work toward her goal.  She had previously emailed me the vocabulary journal she’s using with her students for the Wit & Wisdom unit for The Phantom Tollbooth.  She had already given the pretest, which gave us the starting point, and they are on Ch. 4 now.  She is teaching the vocabulary as they come to it.  She also showed me the pockets with word cards and bookmarks they have made for the taught vocabulary words.  She has been focused on synonyms and affixes and is teaching one word at a time (seven words so far).  She is planning to use the POSSUM strategy from the module for later chapters.  She said the students are really enjoying the work and doing great.  She wonders if it will get harder as they learn more words.  I promised (and sent after the call) to give her the visual story maps for The Phantom Tollbooth that I created for the ESL Department, since this is a group of ELLs.  They have no ELL teacher in their building and haven’t had access to the visual story maps.  She was thrilled to get them.

We were able to mark her progress as at the 1/4 point.

We talked about what her teacher-focused goal might be and she is considering morphology.  She said that in class it had been said that one of the best ways to teach comprehension was through morphology.

We will meet again on 4/8/26 at 4:15 pm.
