Notes

Coach Log Note 1:

Since our last meeting, Mary has communicated several times about her experiences and success using the Fundamentals of Sentence Writing Strategy (FSWS) with her EL students.  Over the last two weeks we reviewed her data on each lesson and clarified related instructional processes.

For the course, she is currently working on collection of data to submit for the Four Quadrant exercise.  She is using Fastbridge results and MAP data; she is working collaboratively with the reading specialist to acquire and interpret thee data.

Student goal acquisition: Baseline for writing complete sentences ranged form 0% to 67% complete sentences for students identified as needing sentence fluency intervention.  Mary is now on the linking verbs lesson of the FSWS.  She indicates that the incremental, systematic and explicit instruction is helpful to her students.  She is incorporating this work with the students’ creation of a yearbook. Current data – Identify components of  a complete sentence – 100%; Identify and use action verbs and subjects in simple sentences – 100% for each of three students.

We also discussed the unique profiles of several students in her charge, including issues of trauma, home language, access to home internet for additional support through programs such as Rosetta Stone, and lack of data from previous schools.  We also discussed the philosophical differences in staff decisions to allow for high school electives (her choice) vs additional study hall time for a student going to the high school next year.

She shared that her mother has been diagnosed with lung cancer and we shared our quality of life challenges about our living parents.

Next Steps

To Do: Continue to apply the FSWS and collect data to ensure goal attainment.
