Coach Log Note 1:

During a personal check-in, Erin shared about Kinderlymics (“so much fun!”) that she created for her grade level to include games:  bobsled, speed skating, luge, curling, and ski jump.  Leading up to the events, they studied the history of the Olympics, countries participating, tracked medals on a map, created flags, and created trading cards for the athletes of Team USA.  She was exhausted, but proud!

When asked about coursework, she said she was caught up through Modules 7 and 8.

She does want to pursue instruction for higher level thinking skills for a small group of her students.  We did some planning for the lesson I would teach on March 18 and discussed the standards this instruction could support (RL2.1 and RL2.7).

I prepared slides and she made copies for me of the inferring sheets and sent me a list of first names so that I could create name tags.  I utilized the lesson planning template from the course.

I taught them about inferring:

What is it?                                                               Combining what we read with what we know to answer our questions about the text

When do I do it?                                                          All throughout the text we are reading or listening to

Why should I do it?                                           …because the author doesn’t tell me everything!

How do I do it?

1.Read until I come to something I don’t understand.

2.Ask myself:  “Does the author expect me to read between the lines?”  If so …

3.Look for clues.

4.Think what I know that connects.

5.Figure out what the author means.

I utilized Miss Nelson Is Missing.  Her students were fun and engaged.  We debriefed the lesson afterward.

We will follow up with email about the specifics of her goal.
