Will (a district instructional coach) is partnering with a literacy coach and a 3rd year second grade teacher at Tomahawk Elementary to help increase second grade reading scores. The teachers will assess the students using an adapted 3rd grade assessment to get a baseline score and then set a goal for the end of the year.

Will sent a video of his meeting with the Literacy Coach and the second grade teacher that he will be teaming with for establishing a goal to apply structured literacy principles and practices of this course. We discussed the plan of the teachers wanting to prepare the second graders for being better test takers in third grade, by using an adapted 3rd grade test for this time in the classroom working the students. I had many questions about this practice and he said he would be able to ask them next time they met. Some of the questions were…
- What test were they using?
- What was the test measuring? ORF? Comprehension?
- How have the students performed on second grade reading assessments? Are they performing at grade level?
- How are their Word Recognition skills? Can they decode all one syllable words and multi-syllabic words as evidenced by a phonics survey?
Will was interested in building relationships with these teachers first and then ask questions and then ask questions about the process next week.
