Notes
Danielle shared concerns about a small group of kindergarten students who are not yet demonstrating consistent control of segmenting and blending CVC words. She would like to focus on providing explicit instruction and structured practice in mapping sounds to letters to strengthen these foundational skills.
We discussed using the DREAM goal-setting model to develop a meaningful and measurable goal for our work together. The target group will include the students experiencing the greatest difficulty with segmenting and blending.
We also talked about progress monitoring. Danielle plans to use a teacher-created assessment tool developed collaboratively by her team, as there is currently no consistent district-wide measure for this age group. The team felt a strong need for a targeted tool, so they designed one to guide instruction and track growth.
Her goal is for students in this group to reach 80% accuracy (8/10 CVC words) on this measure by the end of April. She believes this timeline will provide sufficient opportunity to implement small-group instruction within the district’s DRI model for kindergarten.
Instructionally, Danielle plans to incorporate sound boxes to support students with phoneme segmentation and blending. We also discussed the possibility of using sentence dictation as an additional measure to assess students’ application of letter-sound knowledge in connected writing. She plans to explore available resources for this.
We will meet again Mar 4 to review her goal, reflect on initial implementation, and determine whether any adjustments are needed.
