Sarah is making good progress on module completion. She is working on Module 5.
Sarah stressed that there are many competing initiatives going on at her school; she is very insightful about the need to incorporate literacy development while the staff is learning about Fastbridge, SIT planning, and PLC struggles to understand “what interventions should look like.” She acknowledges the difficulty of planning for effective literacy instruction since the assessment tools are limited to Fastbridge and Words Their Way Spelling inventory. We discussed that Dr. Carlson might address these issues as the principal is willing to meet with her and perhaps set up professional development in October related to the coursework. I indicated that I would contact Dr. Carlson to initiate their conversation. Sarah plans to look into giving her principal video access to the course.

Since our meeting, we have emailed back and forth about her student goal. Our conversations included the need to refine her stated goal of developing verbal reasoning and considered reading comprehension, vocabulary knowledge, logical deduction and critical thinking instruction. Sarah narrowed it down to considering inferencing or vocabulary development. I suggested she also look more specifically to academic vocabulary development to meet secondary setting demands. I stressed the need to back up her choice with data and evidence that the child needs those skills to access the curriculum and to develop literacy skills based on quadrant model evidence. She is still in the process of determining the actual goal she wants to pursue since data is very limited in any of these areas. She may use HMH curriculum assessments to establish baselines and progress monitoring.
