Notes
Kyla is making substantial progress in her coursework. She has finished Module 5 and plans to work on Module 6 over the weekend. Kyla shared that she enjoys the course very much. She is particularly excited by the weekly ZOOM meetings with Dr. Carlson. She finds the discussions and candid reflections to be inspirational.
We spent much time talking about instructional practices related to the self-contained history course she teaches. Specifically, we addressed how various concepts teaching strategies and graphic organizers could assist in vocabulary and comprehension skill development. We discussed the methodology of pre-teaching the graphic and selecting essential vocabulary that mirror the general education course (to ensure access through the IEP). We also discussed the importance of advance and post organizers to assist students in anchoring the lesson and to evaluate learning. I will send her more information on the SIM Concept Mastery Routine and SIM Unit Organizer Routine with the intention of providing a model for use in the future if she desires.
We also discussed her semester goals. She will work on developing language around the relationship between SDI and structured literacy. We discussed initial vocabulary terms to incorporate into a lexicon. Second, we discussed her decision to work on a decoding goal for one of her students. We discussed the student’s assessment data and IEP goal. I will send her a link to sites for decodable text resources; we reiterated the need to use these for reinforcement rather than for initial teaching. We also discussed the importance of finding resources that are age appropriate for adolescents. I will send her an article (Moats) confirming the challenges and steps to take.
