Coaching Session #3 – Commit to Change
Coachee: Chelsea McCormick
Date/Time: October 6, 2026, 3:15 p.m.
Next Coaching Date/Time: October 20, 2026, 3:15 p.m.
Overarching goal: One 2nd grade student will use tactile and kinesthetic manipulatives and writing activities to improve vowel sounds skills toward the goal of mastering sounds in Level 4 and moving to Level 5 words as long as progress is being made. Currently, the student has not progressed past Level 4 when other students are on Level 6. The PSI associated with the curriculum will be used to progress monitor the student’s skills every three weeks. The dates for achieving progress toward goal are as follows:
By October 6, 2026, the students’ skill set will be reviewed.
By October 20, 2026, the student will have progressed 50% of the way through Level 4 skills.
By November 3, 2026, the student will have progressed 75% of the way through Level 4 skills.
By November 17, 2026, the student will have progressed from Level 4 to Level 5.
Reviewing the Video: Chelsea’s video demonstrated her work with the identified student, B. She is currently working on digraphs. Chelsea used lots of positive reinforcement with the student during the lesson. B. used touch and say during the lesson. Chelsea also asked B. about syllable types during the lesson. There is good modeling by Chelsea of what the mouth and lips are doing for sounds.
Questions to consider: Do you think the student benefits from knowing the syllable types?
Based on our reflections, is there anything we need to change about the overarching goal? Not at this time.
What is working for your student? Stretching the sounds out, using color chips for consonant digraphs/vowel sounds/consonants, touching and saying the sounds. On Day 2 of the lesson, B. will be writing the words, as well. Chelsea noted that she includes nonsense words in the lessons because that is something the students are assessed on. She also noted that B. needs lots of positive reinforcement and support during lessons.
What is challenging for you or for your students? At one point B. struggled with /sh/. Chelsea noted that there are lots of sounds to tackle and moving at a good pace is essential to accomplish the goal.
Have you determined any progress toward goal during the past week? From the last coaching session to this coaching session, B. and Chelsea have only met three times so progress is difficult to determine at this time.
Are you confident that students will make the improvement we are striving for by mid-December? Yes.
Do we need to change anything about the goal at this time? Not at this time.
Working on Next Steps
Parent-teacher conferences are next week; Chelsea will discuss the work she is doing with B. at the conference with her parents.
Keep working on steps toward goal that you want to meet by mid-October.
Create video for this goal of your teaching and student learning by October 20.
