Clare felt positive about how she cobbled together course resources and dug out what else was available at her school to create learning activities for her students. She says Sonaday is dry and boring, so she uses it as a curriculum guide and supplements it with more interactive activities.
She described (and demonstrated) how she used some little mini-whiteboards and magnet squares she found to follow the LETRS activity for decoding she was reminded of in the course. The kids enjoy it. She also found Bridge the Gap by Heggerty and is using that resource to design phonemic awareness activities for her older students. Additionally, she has access to Reading A-Z, so she can download books and reading passages from there.
Clare said she really wants the students to increase their fluency rather than just decoding sound by sound. We set a fluency goal and she is going to get a baseline for fluency even if she has to use a 1st grade reading probe.
Co-constructed goal:
Using Sonday as curriculum guide, and supplementing with interventions learned in the course, Clare will explicit instruction in phonics and phonemic awareness to build fluency skills in her 4th and 5th grade students who currently read at a 1st grade level; fluency will improve by 20% by Christmas break.
